Phillip Gill has been watching auto racing since before he could walk. Seated comfortably in a baby backpack on his father's shoulders, Phillip spent sunny weekend afternoons watching the races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. His father, Tom Gill, had always loved the sport, learning the driver's names, cheering on his favorites, and having his young son there with him. Is it any wonder that today Phillip Gill is aiming to become one of the top drivers in the world? Phillip, a 16-year-old and a junior at St. Xavier, is well on his way toward that goal. Racing since he was five years old, Phillip ranks among the upper echelon of ultra -talented young Bandolero Car racers nationwide. In 2003, he and his #32 Bandolero car finished first in the region and eighth in the nation in his Young Guns division of 114 racers. Of the 28 officially sanctioned races Phillip entered in 2003, he finished first in 17 of them. Phillip has a focus and determination that's rare among 14-year-olds. Sure, he has an easy laugh, an easygoing attitude and enjoys the same activities as other kids his age, like video games, playing the sax, hanging out with his brother Andrew and playing with his dog. But, when it comes to auto racing, Phillip Gill is all business. He and his father Tom set concrete goals for each season: * This year I will rank among the top three drivers in my category. * This year I will rank among the top 10 in the country. * This year I will compete in increasing numbers of races, on increasingly difficult tracks. Together, he and his father analyze good races and bad ones to identify elements that contribute to each win. They also monitor his progress throughout the season. Every time he drives, Phillip works to improve his driving techniques: hand-eye coordination, mental quickness and speed. He learns how to look ahead, how to avoid trouble, and how to respond with lightening-fast speed. Throughout the year, he works to build his athleticism, strength and endurance. It takes time and dedication to be a competitive driver, with days of racing and nights of traveling to speedways across the south and Midwest. But, auto racing has become an important part of the Gill family culture, and Legends racing has made a positive impression on their lives forever. The sport of Legends Car racing has always placed an emphasis on creating a fun, family-oriented atmosphere where moms and dads, brothers and sisters, family and friends can all spend time together doing something they love. The Gill family loves the way racing draws them closer. Mother Michele and brother Andrew are often there on the sidelines with Tom, cheering on Phillip as loud as they can. And there's a lot to cheer about. Phillip has progressively moved up in car class and rank: starting with the quarter midget car, graduating to the Bandolero Car and now to the Legends Car. With each progression, he moves up to a bigger, more powerful automobile on a longer track, and each time moves to a more highly-charged, more competitive atmosphere. Phillip wouldn't have it any other way. He loves the competition, the sights, the smells, the sounds of the racetrack. He drives because he loves it, and he drives to win. |
